MRA backs Chevron’s Elizabeth Quay 30-storey tower

Energy giant Chevron’s $360 million Australian headquarters at Elizabeth Quay has been recommended for approval by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.

The 30-storey office tower, to be constructed by Brookfield on the 6795sqm Lot 7 of the waterfront precinct, occupies a key location at Perth’s newest tourist drawcard. It is anchored by a three-level podium building incorporating five street-facing cafe/restaurants and two shop tenancies on the ground floor.

A gym and childcare centre will take up parts of the first and second levels, with more than 52,000sqm of office space to be occupied by Chevron on the floors above.

Lawson Apartments residents, who live opposite on Sherwood Court, objected to the proposed development saying it would result in a loss of privacy and visual amenity.

They also raised concerns about the increase in traffic created by the 136 on-site car bays to be housed in a basement beneath the tower.

A ground-level sculpture, functional furniture and a suspended piece inside the tower foyer will fulfil the building’s $2 million public art requirement.

The MRA report said it considered the Chevron proposal “an innovative and unique” building that will allow view corridors, minimise wind impacts and retain a mature fig tree on site.

The Central Perth Land Redevelopment Committee will consider the proposal on December 3.
