Karina Carvalho, who reportedly quit the ABC last year over concerns about editorial direction, will return to Australian TV screens on 7NEWS in Melbourne.

Carvalho, who started her media career in Perth reading the ABC WA 7pm news for three years from 2008, will start her new role next Monday, both presenting and reporting from the field.

“I am delighted to be joining the first-class 7NEWS team in Melbourne and looking forward to making a valuable contribution to the ongoing success of the network,” Carvalho said.

“Melbourne is and always has been the nation’s most engaged audience for news and sport, so to be a part of the Seven newsroom here is an honour.”

Born in Sri Lanka, Carvalho was raised in WA, before heading to Queensland, where she presented the 7pm News and ABC News Channel’s Evenings and Mornings programs.

Carvalho has anchored rolling coverage of terrorist attacks, flood emergencies and bushfires, and the rolling coverage of the Queen’s death and King Charles’s accession to the throne.

She ended her 17-year-long career with the ABC last year, with reports indicating she had concerns over the national broadcaster’s editorial direction.

Seven director of news and current affairs Anthony De Ceglie said the network was excited to welcome Carvalho to the team.

“Her experience and expertise speak for themselves, as does the leadership qualities she will bring not just to our Melbourne newsroom but across the country,” he said.

Carvalho will present Seven Melbourne’s Afternoon News at 4pm from Monday, 5 August and will co-present weekend editions of Melbourne’s 7NEWS alongside Mike Amor from Saturday, 10 August for a month while Rebecca Maddern is on planned leave.
