Beyond the Saleyards: Little movement from local processors, but big demand from the east coast

WA lamb markets have seen little movement from our local processors but feedlots have shown increasing interest in lighter Merinos as they eye opportunities in east coast forward markets. The market for sub-38kg Merino whether lambs this week saw several buyers reappear, along with the continued demand from SA feedlots. Mutton markets also continued to lift, particularly heavy mutton. The low end of processor prices is $2.20/kg and higher prices are being paid for heavier lines. Victorian and SA processors are continuing to actively source livestock out of WA, including mutton, hoggets and lambs. Goat depots have increased their prices by $0.20 over the past week, following the previous week’s increase in carcase weight prices by processors. WA cattle markets also continue to see buying interest. Local yearling steers are bid $2.80 and heifers $2.60. Live export markets appear to be trading unchanged values out into July with bids remaining around $2.60 for quality lines of Brahman steers ex Queensland.
