Otherside Brewing Co’s parent company to acquire Nowhereman Brewing Co and merge two breweries

Otherside Brewing Co.’s parent company Triple-1-Three plans to acquire West Leederville brewery Nowhereman Brewing Co. under a deal that will see the two respected WA craft breweries amalgamate. Announcing the deal, which is subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, Triple-1-Three said it would acquire Nowhereman’s brewpub and associated assets in return for shares in Triple-1-Three. Under the deal, Nowhereman’s brewpub will be re-branded as an Otherside venue. The West Leederville venue, which opened in a former furniture factory in 2017, will join Freo.Social, long-running North Fremantle music venue Mojos and the Otherside Brewhouse in Myaree in the Triple-1-Three stable. The hospitality group is also set to open the Otherside Brew Lounge at Perth Airport’s Terminal 2 in November. Triple-1-Three managing director James Legge said uniting the two craft beer brands presented a “fantastic opportunity … in a rapidly changing landscape, both in brewing and hospitality”. Otherside was launched in 2018 by former partners in festival promoters Sunset Events, before becoming part of the wider Triple-1-Three company. The acquisition of Nowhereman continues the group’s expansion plans. Nowhereman founder Reece Wheadon will work across the amalgamated entities, while current general manager Pia Poyton will be appointed as Otherside’s head of sales. Otherside’s current sales director Chris Webster will leave the business. “We’re so incredibly proud of what we’ve built, the community we’ve connected with and the stories we’ve made,” Mr Wheadon said. “The coming together of two value-aligned businesses is going to help those connections, create more stories and take our beloved West Leederville brewpub to heights we couldn’t on our own. “We couldn’t be more excited to join Triple-1-Three and work with their great humans.” Mr Wheadon told The West Australian that the merger didn’t spell the end of Nowhereman’s packaged range, which includes the award-winning Rhapsody XPA. He said there would still be scope to brew experimental beers at the West Leederville brewpub. Wheadon also plans to open a small bar, called Odway, in Northbridge as a business separate from Nowhereman and Triple-1-Three. The announcement of the merger follows the recent news of Atari Enterprises, the company behind South Fremantle brewery and distillery Running With Thieves, going into administration and at least one other independent WA craft brewery being forced to restructure in the face of mounting debts. Running With Thieves co-founder Scott Douglas told craft beer website The Crafty Pint that the venue, which opened in late 2020, would continue to trade as normal and have retained their entire staff. Several East Coast breweries have also gone into liquidation or voluntary administration in the past 12 months as the craft beer boom loses momentum. Mr Wheadon said that following four years of “unprecedented, rapid expansion”, the craft beverage industry was feeling the pinch of the “increasing cost of goods and tightening consumer spending”. Over the next few years, he expects to see “significant mergers, partnerships and closures as the industry adjusts to current market conditions”.
