The next building block in MG‘s growing model lineup has been put in place today at the Melbourne motor show.

The Chinese brand has revealed Australian details for its S5 electric SUV ahead of its arrival in local showrooms within the next month or so as a replacement for the ZS EV.

It has yet to announce final pricing information for the electric crossover, but confirmed that customers can now officially register their interest through the local dealer network.

The S5 EV will be offered in two model grades – Excite and Essence – and with the choice of either a 49kWh or 64kWh battery pack that deliver between 410km and 515km (NEDC) of driving range.

The smaller capacity battery has a maximum DC charging rate of 120kW while the larger can handle up to 150kW. MG claims both can be replenished on a fast charger from 30 to 80 per cent in approximately 19 minutes.

All variants will feature a single electric motor driving the rear wheels that produces 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque, and are covered by MG’s benchmark 10-year/250,000km warranty.

The five-seater S5 EV is based on the same mechanical platform as the popular MG 4 hatchback, but is significantly larger in almost all dimensions.
