GSFLW 2025: Five rounds of triple headers, addition of youth girls competition for new women’s footy season

The Great Southern Football League Women’s competition will have more triple-header fixtures in 2025 while the addition of a youth girls competition will also be unveiled. The new women’s season will kick off on Saturday with a blockbuster of five consecutive games at Keep The Sheep Stadium. The youth girls competition will be played for the first time this year, with four clubs fielding teams in a 10-round home-and-away season. The GSFLW will again consist of six clubs and five of the 10 qualifying rounds will be played as triple headers with all games at the same venue on the same day. Two youth girls matches will be played before three GSFLW games at Albany’s Keep The Sheep Stadium, as part of Blue Tree Project Round on Saturday. There will also be triple headers in the GSFLW in round three at Retravision Stadium, Pride Round on February 15 at Retravision Stadium, round eight at Retravision Stadium and round 10 at Sounness Park. GSFL women’s director Kathleen Mier said players had advocated for more rounds with all six teams in acton. “There was good discussion around fixturing,” Mier said. “Round one last year was all there on the same day and everyone enjoyed that atmosphere so we’ve tried to do that more and added more of those on. “Especially with the youth girls, we can play it all on the same day and hopefully people will come and stay the whole day. “There was enough interest to start youth girls this year, the clubs doing it are really keen. “It will be a really good starting point moving forward, getting the girls playing at a younger age. Mt Barker and Albany will not field teams in the first season of the youth girls competition. The GSFLW begins on January 18 and the regular season consists of five Friday and five Saturday rounds. The grand final replay between the Bulls and Sharks will be at Sounness Park on February 7.
