Toxic fumes are billowing from a rubbish fire near a remote Indigenous community near Kalgoorlie.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the alert just before 6pm on Saturday, warning the Hazmat fire near the Kurrawang Community in Mt Burges was resulting in potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a south westerly direction.

People in the area bounded by Sharpe Drive, Great Eastern Highway and the rail line in Mt Burgess are advised to remain inside with doors and windows closed.

DFES also advises them to switch off their air conditioners, stay away from the area of the fire and, if already in the area, to take advice from emergency services personnel.

Anyone with medical concerns can contact their local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
