Firefighters are desperately working to free a driver after his car slammed into the back of a truck about 50km north-east of Perth.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Tonkin Highway and Granary Drive in Muchea after the car crashed into the back of a truck about 10.30am on Friday.

The driver of the car — a male in his 30s — was trapped in the wreckage.

The extent of his injuries are not known.

The truck driver was not hurt.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St John WA and WA Police are on the scene.

Main Roads WA urged motorists to take alternative routes with Tonkin Highway southbound after Granary Drive closed.

There is heavy congestion in the area.
