Labor’s $745m school infrastructure plan involves $23.5m for new gym at Champion Bay Senior High School

Two Geraldton high schools would receive a new gym and revamped classrooms as part of the first round of promised upgrades under a re-elected Cook Government. Premier Roger Cook announced Labor’s $745 million education blueprint on Wednesday, coinciding with kids returning to school for 2025, including building 11 new schools and upgrading dozens more. Among the pledges are $23.5m for a new gymnasium at Champion Bay Senior High School and $8m for classroom refurbishments, lighting and air-conditioning upgrades at Geraldton SHS. They will be among the first redevelopments under Labor’s plan for a $286m School Infrastructure Fund, which will allow the gradual refurbishment of hundreds of ageing primary and secondary schools across WA. “We want every WA student to have the best possible education, no matter where they live,” Mr Cook said. “That’s why we are committing to do what’s right for WA and continue our record investment in new and improved school infrastructure right across the State. “In addition to funding works or planning for 11 new schools, we’re creating WA’s first dedicated School Infrastructure Fund to undertake refurbishments at ageing schools so they remain fit-for-purpose and can continue giving our students a world-class education.”
