CMCFL round 4: Cervantes and Dandaragan back in form with big wins

Teams looked in 2023 form as Cervantes and Dandaragan came up trumps in round four of the Central Midlands Coastal Football League on Saturday.

Cervantes were back in the winner’s seat on Saturday with a 19.10 (124) to 13.7 (85) win over Moora.

The Tiger Sharks were stunned in round two by the Pirates, going down by 39-points after a strong win in round one.

Coming off the bye, Cervantes looked back in form as they had a whopping 29 scoring shots in the win over the Mavericks.

While Moora is yet to claim points this season, they managed to be competitive against Cervantes through three quarters.

Mavericks had the jump early, taking the lead in the first quarter with the scores at 27-19.

The Tiger Sharks responded in the second with a six-goal quarter, while Moora had just one in response.

A comeback from Moora in the third quarter saw them entering the final period down just six points, but Cervantes blew them out of the water in the fourth.

Mavericks kicked just two goals while Cervantes scored seven to bring home their second win of the season in the 39-point contest.

Big-time goal kicker Isaac Devitt-Boyd kicked four in his first game for the Tiger Sharks this season, while Great Northern Football League recruit Tristan Jacques scored three.

Bradley Smith booted four for the Mavericks along with three from Axel George and two from Nathan Hutchison.

An improved Lancelin-Ledge Point side couldn’t hold their own against the 2023 minor premiers as Dandaragan won the contest 17.18 (120) to 5.3 (33) on Saturday.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at Dandaragan but was moved to a Lancelin home game during the week.

Despite gaining the advantage, the Pirates looked to be back in old form after their hot start to the season.

The Saints came out fast with a 35-point first quarter while the Pirates managed just one goal.

The match snowballed from there, as Dandaragan continued to pile on the goals in each term.

During the Saints’ scoring assault, Campbell Putland had a day out with six goals, helped out by three from Jesse Reinke and two from Jamie Paul.

With his bag, Putland now leads the league in goals kicked with 13, followed by Austin Britza from Jurien Bay with nine.

Round five features the old rivalry between Jurien Bay and Cervantes, and Lancelin host Moora on Saturday.

In the reserves, Cervantes got up 13.6 (84) to 4.11 (35) over Moora and Lancelin beat Dandaragan 7.12 (54) to 6.5 (41).

Meanwhile, in the hockey Moora beat Cervantes 2-1 and Dandaragan defeated Lancelin 5-1.

In A-grade netball Cervantes trumped Moora 67-38 and Dandaragan beat Lancelin 40-1.
