Narrogin’s Mia Ewen collects 2024 young citizen of the year award for outstanding leadership and ambition

A young go-getter has been recognised for her unstoppable drive and leading spirit at Narrogin’s Citizen of the Year Awards. Mia Ewen collected the 2024 young citizen of the year award medallion and certificate as part of Narrogin’s Australia Day celebrations on Sunday at Alby Park, acknowledging her leadership, sporting achievements, and voluntary work in Narrogin and Wickepin. The Shire of Narrogin commended the Narrogin Senior High School student councillor and Flames netball captain for her consistent and exceptional commitment to community service, demonstrated through her leadership roles. Mia’s family travelled from Bunbury as a surprise to support and celebrate her when she received the award, but her mother was attending the Wickepin Australia Day celebration as a citizen of the year nominee. Mia said she felt honoured to receive such a grand award at just 14. “It’s an achievement to me because not many kids my age will be receiving an award like that, which makes me feel powerful,” she said. “I hope it inspires other kids around my age to try their best in everything they do.” Mia said she was grateful for the support system around her which continued to encourage her to push herself and try new things. She said it was important to volunteer for the community because it drove her forward while opening doors for other young people. Mia will join the WA student council in February, and served NSHS as a student councillor from Years 7-9. She said she was inspired to take on the higher role so she could help her community and give locals a voice from a greater and influential place.
