Drivers travelling between Hedland and Newman are being urged to take extra care after a “significant” traffic incident this afternoon.

It is understood a road train involved was ferrying cattle and some animals may have escaped and be near roads, posing a traffic hazard.

Police issued the warning for a section of the Great Northern Highway 150km south of South Hedland, near Coonarrie Creek, after the incident at 3pm in which a road train and what officers described as “several other vehicles” collided.

Police, St Johns Ambulance and traffic management staff are enroute.
