Child care the main topic discussed between Peter Carter and Roger Cook on the Premier's first Hedland visit

Childcare and education were the main topics of discussion between mayor Peter Carter and Roger Cook on the Premier’s first visit to Port Hedland in the top job. During Mr Cook’s visit to the Spoilbank Marina on Wednesday, July 26, he had the opportunity to speak with multiple prominent members of the Pilbara community including Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel and Port Hedland mayor Peter Carter. Premier Cook said that these discussions were important to him because of the connection and history he has with the town. “I’m a huge fan and I love Port Hedland,” he said. “Back in my native title days I worked up here for many weeks on end and I’ve got a huge affection for the community here.” At the event, Cr Carter had the opportunity to speak with the Premier and said that their conversation focused on the town’s childcare issues. “Probably the most important thing that we talked about were land releases, education and childcare,” he said. “I mean, the things that every town in Western Australia is having trouble with are childcare, education and schooling. “Just generally giving him the feel of what Hedland needs and what we want.” Last week the North West Telegraph reported how the Town of Port Hedland was looking for funding for the planned aquatic centre at the new South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub. Cr Carter said he also discussed funding for the project with the Premier. “We’ve got a massive new aquatic centre going ahead,” he said. “So we need to try and work together to try and find a way to get funding available from the State Government to help us grow our town and make it more liveable.”
