Hedland residents felt ‘an implosion in the house’ as small earthquake rocks port town

A 2.3 magnitude earthquake occurred south of Pippingarra on Monday, July 31, with multiple residents in South and Port Hedland reporting that their houses shook from the natural phenomena. The recorded earthquake occurred at 4:40 pm yesterday at a depth of 10km and a Facebook post recorded multiple residents saying they heard a bang and felt their homes and windows shake. One resident said that the quake felt like, “an implosion inside the house.” A DFES spokesperson said no emergency calls were put out in relation to the earthquake. The last significant earthquake in the vicinity occurred on November 13, 2021, when a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred 148km south of Port Hedland.
