Jetty improvements a lure for anglers
Port Hedland’s Main Street Jetty has reopened after extensive upgrades to improve comfort and meet the needs of its visitors.
The new grid-mesh walkway and handrails are sturdy, allowing smooth wheelchair access, and rod holders, bait-cutting boards and two new taps are also a welcome addition for anglers.
Town of Port Hedland chief executive David Pentz said the reopening of the jetty, after its closure on April 9, was of significant interest to residents.
“This is well-used, well valued by the community and was in need of a revamp,” he said.
“All the additions for the safety improvements, the fish-cleaning station, the rod holders and the lighting — it’s all the little things that make the difference.”
The jetty piles have been wrapped with protective material, the lower level of the jetty has been cleaned and painted — with lighting fitted improving the jetty experience for night-time users.
“We are pleased to reopen the improved facility, knowing that it now meets Australian standards for public infrastructure which makes it a more enjoyable facility for everyone," Pilbara Ports Authority general manager engineering and infrastructure Charles Kretzmann said.
“The upgrades mean the jetty will continue to serve the Port Hedland community and the region’s visitors for many years to come.
“PPA thanks the community for their patience and understanding while the works were completed.”
