Multiple dangerous incursions into the Spoilbank Marina from curious residents have prompted calls from the Pilbara Ports Authority to stop people from entering the site. In June the sand bund which ensured the Marina remained dry was removed, exposing the basin to the ocean for the first time. Spoilbank Marina project manager John Freimanis said multiple people on boats and jet skis had been entering the construction site and putting themselves at risk. “We understand that people are really keen to see the progress we have made on the Marina but we would just like to remind people it’s not open just yet,” he said. “There is still a lot of work under way, the breakwaters are still being built, and we have got a lot of piles for the navigation aids which are still being installed. “The risk is that with a high tide, those aren’t really visible so that can pose a danger for recreation vessels who are unfamiliar with the area.” Additional signage at the Marina is planned to warn people about the dangers of entering the site. With landside construction underway, Mr Freimanis said the project was still on schedule for completion in 2024.
