Newman impressive in F-section

Teams from across WA have descended on Perth for five days of cricketing action at the annual Alcohol Think Again Senior Country Week.

Among the 48 teams were outfits from Port Hedland and Newman playing in the E and F sections between January 21 and 26.

Port Hedland opened their E-section competition against Peel on the synthetic grass of Des Penman Reserve on January 21 but fell short at 103 runsto Peel’s 7-230.

In their second match, Hedland defeated Warren Blackwood CA2 at Karoonda North — the Pilbara team winning the toss and cruising to 163 runs against BW’s 62 runs.

Hedland were spurred on by Tim Lees who bashed the ball to all corners of the ground, making 91 runs including 11 fours and one six.

Hedland were again on the back foot in the third match, making 8- 83 before Geraldton rose to win the match with 150 at Ferndale Park on January 23.

In round four, Hedland defeated Northam CA at Gwynne Park, the team smashing 8-215 while Northam fell short at 8-147.

In their final game, Port Hedland made 4-124, once again defeating Warren Blackwood CA at Karoonda South on January 26.

Chris Briody starred with the bat making 44 not-out while Blackwood made 109.

Newman made quite an impression in F-section, taking the easy first round bye on January 21 before demolishing Nor-West and Murchison in round two.

Newman produced a 7 -277 belting with Darren Reid striking 102 runs and team-mate Alexander Twaddle retiring on 56; their rivals reached 8-153 runs.

They were defeated by 105 runs in their round three match against Donnybrook but recovered to smash another huge total against the West Pilbara team in round four.

Newman produced 7-293, with Chris Hamilton making 141 runs to set them up for a final-round match on Australia Day.

Newman’s Josh Williams made 60 runs while Darren Reid made 43 against Fortescue at Gwynne Park, their rivals making 191 while the team carved out 6-253.

The A-section title was claimed by Geraldton Senior Cricket Association over Albany Cricket Association with Geraldton making 10-133 in 52.3 overs against Albany’s 34 runs in 20.5 overs.

Geraldton’s Cody Bone was named best player of the Alcohol Think Again Senior Country Week for 2018, winning the Barry Shepherd Medal

The WACA, in association with the Western Australian Country Cricket Board is anticipating another high-quality tournament in 2019.
