Pirates prove the North West is best on diamond

The 2020 Crunch and Sip Junior WA Softball Championships saw North West Softball players come together to create combined teams to represent the region.

Despite it being the first time many players had come together, they managed to win a title.

The North West Pirates, made up of players from Port Hedland, Karratha, Geraldton and Wickham, made their way to Mirrabooka Stadium in Perth last weekend to face off against some of the best players from around the state.

They left nothing on the field, smashing balls out of the stadium and proving North West is best, especially in diamond sports.

The under-18s boys’ team managed to do the unthinkable, winning the title thanks to some unbeatable pitching from Ambrose Italiano, who changed the pace of his pitching making it too unpredictable for the opposition to handle.

Corey Bowins received MVP of the tournament for a few hits that organisers and opposition couldn’t believe.

One of the youngster’s hits cleared the stadium and the carpark, sparking rumours it could be the hardest hit in the tournament’s history.

The girls’ team hit home-runs, triples and strike outs all weekend, coming together even though most had only met for the first time the night before the tournament started.

They managed to finish top of the ladder, and despite falling just short in the final they proved to everyone how good they were, with Tarryn Purcell from Geraldton receiving the award for tournament MVP.
