Man dies at Rio Tinto mine site after reports of an explosion
A man aged in his early 50s has died after reports of an explosion at a mine site in the Pilbara.
Police were called out to Rio Tinto’s Yandicoogina iron ore mine, 95km north-west of Newman, just after midday on Tuesday.
According to Rio Tinto, the man died in a “serious incident” at the site.
“Emergency services are on scene. Rio Tinto has advised the relevant authorities and will assist their investigations,” it said.
“The company will provide all the necessary support for the employee’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The Department of Mines and Petroleum confirmed it was aware of the man’s death but could not release further information until next of kin had been notified.
Police arrived at the mine site around 3.30pm, alongside safety inspectors from the DMP.
The investigation into the man’s death is under way.
