Port Hedland Rovers womens’ team makes NPFL debut in Hedland derby
The 2023 season of the women’s North Pilbara Football League kicked off with a historic clash on Friday afternoon down at Kevin Scott Oval with the Rovers making their league debut against the Blazers in the Hedland derby.
Despite the Blazers controlling the play early on, the Rovers’ Mia Fallon made a breakthrough midway through the first term, kicking the ball from the forward fifty into the square, which was then booted through the big sticks by Courtney Godden to make the first ever goal for the Rovers women’s team.
The Hedland Blazers responded with some rough tackles, with Zanamarica Bodey laying on some terrific bumps and breaking through the packs.
Then in the second half the Blazers kept the ball locked in their forward half with defender Kirsty Kubala batting back anything that came across the centre line.
And when the Rovers managed to make an attack on goal the Blazers kept the pressure on, not giving the Rovers any room to breath while in possession.
While the Rovers made impressive showings during their first ever game, the Blazers experience served them well, allowing them to edge out the newly formed side and take home the win, 5.5 (35) to 2.2 (14)
In Karratha the Falcons took on the Kats in the Karratha derby at Kevin Richards Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Kats dominated the play chalking up a massive win over the Falcons, 12.8 (80) to 1.2 (8).
Meanwhile down at Windy Ridge Oval the Dampier Sharks also took home a massive victory against the Wickham Wolves on Saturday afternoon, 9.2 (60) to 0.2 (2).
