Two prescribed burns for nature conservation and to manage bushfire risk will be conducted in the Pilbara today.

One will be 380km east-north-east of Newman and the other 370km east-north-east of Newman

The Department of Parks and Wildlife is urging motorists to take care, turn on headlights and carefully follow traffic management signs when driving through areas affected by smoke.

People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances.

A statement from DPAW this morning said prescribed burns created low-fuel areas in a mosaic of burnt and unburnt patches across the landscape, which help stem the spread of bushfires.

“Prescribed burning is the primary tool available to Parks and Wildlife to manage fuel loads, which helps protect the community by minimising the impact of bushfires,” the statement said.
