SES mascot needs name

Hedland State Emergency Service has a new mascot and youth in the Hedland community are being asked to name it.

The mascot is the newest addition to the unit, which is made up of about 22 volunteers, and will be used to promote public awareness and community engagement.

Local unit manager Keith Squibb said the initiative was aimed at getting children interested and involved in the area of emergency services by inviting them to submit their ideas.

He said it was vital for people to understand the potential dangers of cyclones at an early age to learn and appreciate the ferocity associated with natural disasters.

The local authority is looking at engaging schools with the mascot to provide presentations in a fun and interactive manner.

Mr Squibb said families should be working together to have a plan in place in the lead-up to cyclone season, in case of an emergency.

“If you build a community that is resilient, you build a community that can pull together through it,” he said.

“It helps get over it if something major happens as opposed to having an apathetic community.”

The authority is urging Pilbara residents to tidy up their yards and not to become complacent.
