Student recognised for strong leadership

A Hedland primary school student has taken out one of this year’s Strong Leaders in our Community NAIDOC awards, an accolade usually bestowed on adults.

Nine-year-old South Hedland Primary School student Jay-El Lockyer was nominated by school principal Daryl Mansfield for the award because of his impressive school values and sportsmanship.

“Jay-El is an outstanding young man and a great ambassador for South Hedland Primary School,” Mr Mansfield said.

“He always displays the schools values of Be Your Best, Be Respectful, and Be Safe.

“He encourages his peers and shows exemplary sportsmanship.

“Jay-El is helpful and is highly respected by everyone ... is a proud and passionate young Aboriginal student who aspires to be an outstanding citizen and potential leader in years to come.”

Aboriginal Strong Leaders elder Sally Mac presented the award to Jay-El during a school assembly held last Friday, because he had missed the original Yule River Bush meetings in the holidays.
