Top gardenersearn praise

Care For Hedland judges inspected all things green last month as they sought out Hedland’s best garden.

The 2017 Great Garden Competition awards were presented last week at the RSL Community Garden, where Hedland’s green thumbs waiting in anticipation to their rankings.

With eight categories ranging from the most waterwise garden to a giant vegie competition, the grand champion award went to supreme green thumbs Diana and Stewart Herbert.

Care For Hedland Environmental Association co-ordinator Jo Smith said the competition was a way to get people involved in gardening and to promote sustainable and healthy eating.

“Every entry was really very different, it was like comparing apples to oranges and was a really hard choice for the judges,’ she said.

“Some people hav some creative ideas of growing plants and water-saving ideas and it was really cool to see the junior category bring some impressive applications to the table — hopefully we can nurture that passion.”

Ms Smith said she encouraged perspective green thumbs to start documenting their gardens now for the 2018 competition.

“It makes the entrants easier to judge with a whole year’s worth of photos, as at the time of entry you may not have the best garden at that exact moment,” she said.
