Turtle nesting season has arrived early, with the first two nesting sites spotted near Pretty Pool in Port Hedland.

The Town of Port Hedland has partnered with Care for Hedland to install barriers around nesting sites to clearly mark them out and prevent unintentional damage by beachgoers.

In an effort to protect the nesting turtles, the nesting sites and the area are now out-of-bounds to vehicles.

Mayor Peter Carter said turtle nesting season, which normally runs from November to March, was always an exciting time.

“We are so lucky to have such an important breeding ground for the flatback turtles right on our doorstep,” he said.

“The turtles are a terrific drawcard for tourists to our region, as well as being a popular attraction for locals.”

He said all residents had a responsibility to protect this important breeding ground for the turtles and their hatchlings.
