Upgraded pool in big splash

Upgrades to South Hedland Aquatic Centre have gone swimmingly, with residents immersing themselves in the recently opened pool.

A Town of Port Hedland spokes-person said the renewal works had corrected issues with the pool’s piping, filtration and pumps to comply with public safety and the general performance of the mechanical equipment.

Works have also been done to improve shaded areas, pavement repair, new lighting and bathrooms at a cost of almost $1.7 million.

YMCA WA Pilbara leisure and recreation manager Kimberley Ransfield said more than 600 people had attended the grand reopening earlier this year.

“We wanted to create a real sense of community where everyone is included, where we can support people to live a healthier, happier life, no matter what their age or fitness level,” she said.

SHAC is fast becoming a community hub, with swimming programs held for all ages, aqua aerobics, physiotherapy, playgroups, Silver Chain activities, water polo, flipper ball and Port Hedland swim clubs.
