Warning against NBN scams

Community members are being warned of an increasing number of scammers impersonating National Broadband Network employees.

With one in two Australian premises now able to connect to the NBN, scammers are increasingly taking the opportunity to impersonate nbn Co employees and take advantage of consumers, according to the network giant.

The warnings come as the Pilbara-wide roll-out of the network begins in the Port Hedland area.

Nbn chief security officer Darren Kane said the network giant would never make unsolicited calls or doorknock to sell broadband services. “Nbn is the company building and operating Australia’s wholesale broadband network and as a wholesale-only company, we do not sell broadband packages directly to consumers,” he said.

“There are times when nbn may contact you directly as part of the network roll-out but this will never be to sell you a service.”

Mr Kane urged customers to protect their personal information by being on guard, verifying who they were talking to and making an informed decision before signing up to the NBN.

If you think you have been a victim, immediately report the scam to your bank or financial institution or by calling 1300 795 995.
