Week of family fun celebratesregion’s youth
It was fun and games galore in Newman last month as the Shire of East Pilbara celebrated Children’s Week 2017.
A variety of activities were provided to children and families to celebrate the national program.
The week is dedicated to celebrating children, promoting the Rights of the Child, as proclaimed by the United Nations in 1954.
Recognising the talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people, the Shire’s events were held in collaboration with not-for-profit Empowering People in Communities.
Shire president Lynne Craigie said the Shire was happy to celebrate the occasion and the youth throughout the region.
“We don’t need an occasion to celebrate our wonderful kids but as a Shire, we were very happy to support Children’s Week WA and make available many diverse and enjoyable activities for everyone in recognition of the importance and value of our children,” she said.
“My thanks extend to everyone who helped ensure Children’s Week was such a great success especially EPIC, who played such a vital role in helping to make this week so special.”
Events throughout the week included cooking classes, games day at Newman Recreation Centre, storytime at The Square, bush survival skills and Ethel Creek Street Family Fun Day.
The activities and events were chosen to allow children to demonstrate their skills and talents to their parents and guardians.
The week also aims to remind people of the responsibility to advocate for children as citizens and their right to a positive childhood.
