Pilbara Allstars to play against heavyweights from South West, Peel, Great Southern at Country Championships

For the first time in more than 10 years, a team from the Pilbara will be competing in the 2021 Nutrien Ag Country Championships in Perth next week. Top players from Karratha, Dampier, Hedland, Wickham and Newman have been selected to play against regional heavyweights from the South West, Peel, Avon District and Great Southern. Pilbara Allstars colts coach Mike Fountain said it was a great opportunity for the players to showcase their talent in front of AFL and WAFL scouts. “The Pilbara has, over the years, been able to produce AFL-quality players such as Dean Cox from Dampier, Zac Langdon and others so I’m really confident that one or a few of our players have got the skills and the capability to be able to perform at an elite level,” he said. “You’ve only got to do the right thing at the right time in front of the right person and your future could change in an instant. “Our first game will be against the South West who have won the championships for about the last 10 years so if we can be competitive and if all the boys can bring their own individual skills then we’d like to think we’ve got a chance against the reigning champions.” Pilbara Allstars colts assistant coach Trevor Fawcett said the competition was a chance for the players to explore a career in AFL. The competition will be held from September 30 to October 1.
