Twelve girls from the Pilbara chosen as flag bearers at Women's World Cup
Twelve girls from Karratha District Junior Soccer Association, the Newman Junior Soccer Association, the Wickham Wanderers and Baynton Football Club were given an amazing opportunity recently, as they were chosen to be flag bearers at the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Presidents from each club were asked to nominate four girls for the honour, with the groups then walking out during the Panama versus Jamaica match on July 29.
Lily Ridout, Molly Dhu, Ingrid Willett-Green, Emerson Butler, Ammie Millward, Sahara Grainger, Elise Murray, Flo Fulton, Georgia Willock, Savannah Nicholson, Zoe Mitchell and Stella Murphy were all chosen for the honour.
Speaking to Pilbara News, Football West community participation officer Karen Hennessy said all girls nominated to represent the region had demonstrated commitment to soccer and their club through playing, coaching and refereeing.
“Feedback for me was that it was such an amazing opportunity for them to be part of the World Cup and not only that but just see the whole set-up behind it,” she said.
“(It gives them a chance) to see what avenues there are for women in sports.”
The club extended their thanks to Kevin Michel MLA who was there on the day and helped pick out the names of the girls.
