All in the family

Capturing five generations in the one photograph could be considered a tricky task, but one Hedland family have achieved just that.

Lorna Dann and her mother Joy Barr arrived in Port Hedland in 1968, just as the town was starting to boom.

Mrs Dann said during a recent trip to Perth, where her mother now resides, her family took the rare opportunity to take a photo of five generations of women.

“We’re so proud, it’s not often that five generations are alive and in the same place, even though I think I’m a bit young to be a great-grandmother,” she said.

Mrs Dann’s daughter Donita was born in Hedland, followed by her granddaughter Mary Kate and greatgranddaughter Imani.

Mrs Dann is married to the son of Matt Dann, a prominent Hedland figure who played a leading role in the construction phase of the town in the 1960s.

The Port Hedland Historical Society said at a time when there were few opportunities for Aboriginal people, Mr Dann was a tower of strength.
