All-the-way win for Hawks

Hawks delivered the 2012 softball premiership for their fans at the weekend when they proved too strong for the Pirates.

After leading throughout, they won the match 15-2.

Christine Rutherford started the ball rolling for Hawks with a first-up solo home run.

From then on the side never looked back as they scored consistently with four runs in the second at bat, with doubles from Marisa Bradshaw and Seide Ramadan.

In the fourth inning Pirates’ defence held up as pitcher Shelly Glasson kept Hawks batters scoreless.In offence a Nicole Wylie single brought in Nikki Puertollano and Kelly Johnson’s hit scored Wylie, but the comeback was short lived.

Hawks responded, with both Jaymi Lockyer and Stacey Derschow reaching first on safe hits, while Ashleigh Tiller drove them both home with a stand-up double to lead the game eight runs to two. Rutherford took over from

Fiona Lockyer in the pitchers’ circle for Hawks in the fifth.

She closed the door on the opposition, while another six safe hits, including a triple from

Bradshaw and double from Fiona Lockyer, allowed another seven runs cross home plate to secure the trophy.

Rutherford earned the best player award. She cracked three singles and a home run from five at bats.

Lockyer, Derschow, Bradshaw and Ramadan all collected two hits apiece, while Lockyer and Ramadan drove in two runners each.

Nicole Wylie led Pirates’ hitting with two from three and Lisa

Harris joined the hit list with two from four.

Natasha Kingsley and Kelly Johnson both drove in a runner apiece from their single hits.

In the Reserves grand final favourites Rebels came away with the crown, defeating Hawks 13 runs to five in a game in which both sides give up 10 walks apiece. Hawks kept up with the opposition until the last three innings.

Rebels’ defence then shut down any opposition attempts to

score while putting another five runners across home plate to seal the game.

Substitute Liz Morris led Rebels’ batting with two hits from two at bats after coming into the game in the fourth inning. Catcher

Kimmy Cooper hit two from three plus one RBI to earn the umpires’ best player trophy and Marla Froelich hit the side’s only extra-base hit, scoring two runners and picking up three free passes to first base.

Hawks’ Bernadette Spurling and Michelle Grimes recorded a 500 average apiece with one safe hit and two walks each, while Nat

Abbott recorded the only RBI and finished with one from three.

The Port Hedland softball squad will train for the next two weeks before travelling to Carnarvon to compete in the North West Softball Championships on September 29-30.
