Anzac tributes planned across region

People across the Pilbara will pay tribute and remember the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I on Anzac Day.

The Town of Port Hedland has a full day of events planned for the 101st anniversary commemorations of the landing of the Anzac troops in Gallipoli, starting with a 5.30am dawn service at the war memorial outside the Esplanade Hotel.

During the service, The Last Post will sound, an Anzac Day address will be given by Commodore Simon Ottaviano RAN, and wreaths will be laid in remembrance.

Mayor Kelly Howlett encouraged all community members to show their support for the servicemen and women who fought and died in the war.

“It is important we continue to encourage younger generations to acknowledge the significance of Anzac Day,” she said.

“Anzac Day gives everyone the opportunity to honour the tremendous efforts and sacrifices of those Australians who have participated in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world.”

“Each year, the RSL put on a wonderful commemoration service, which truly reflects and remembers the true meaning behind Anzac.”

After the dawn service, the Anzac Day parade starts from in front of the Esplanade Hotel and will march to Marapikurrinya Park.

The Anzac House on Hedditch Street, South Hedland, will open to the public from 9.30am.

In the Shire of East Pilbara, commemorative services will be held in Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar.

Shire president Lynne Craigee encouraged all residents to join with their families, friends and community in remembering the sacrifices of servicemen and women throughout history.

In Newman, the Anzac march will start from the BHP Town Office at 5.45am, followed by a dawn service at the Cenotaph at the Shire offices.

A dawn service in Nullagine will be held at Lynas Lookout named after Nullagine Anzac hero William James Dalton Lynas, at 6am.

Marble Bar commemorations will be held at the RSL Park from 5.45am.

After the commemorative services in each town, a gunfire breakfast will be held and in Newman, the A Troop Regiment Pilbara Barracks will open its wet mess to host the traditional two-up game.
