Award nomination for Hedland youth council

MARK SCOTTNorth West Telegraph

Hedland's Youth Involvement Council has been nominated for the Community Group of the Year category in the WA Regional Achievement and Community Awards.

YIC, which was incorporated in 1990, is the primary youth organisation in the area and delivers a number of programs to young people in Port and South Hedland.

Manager Vicki-Tree Stephens said it was fantastic to have the recognition of YIC’s work through the nomination.

“Working in a non-government organisation is never easy and working with young people with huge life challenges can be even more difficult,” she said.

“We are often too busy doing what we do to stop and try and promote ourselves, so it is fantastic to

have this recognition.

“Life without YIC in the Town of Port Hedland would leave a large gap in service delivery for YIC’s target group.”

South Hedland Primary School principal Narelle Ward, one of the people who nominated YIC for the award, said the organisation was an instrumental component of the Hedland community.

“YIC work in collaboration with South Hedland Primary School to collect children who are experiencing difficulties with attending school and those students who have had some difficulties engaging,” she said.

“They are committed to engaging with youth, providing opportunities to engage in purposeful activities with the support of mentors.”

Nominations for the awards, to be presented on November 16 in Perth, are still open.
