Basketball: Buccs on top
Yandeyarra Buccs cemented its place as one of the top sides in the North West, scooping men’s A-grade honours at the James Kelly Memorial Carnival at the weekend.
The Buccs overcame the challenge of Broome outfit No Limits to etch the team’s name on to the silverware after a well-contested match.
Joe Coppin secured the MVP vote for the victors.
Women’s honours went to North West Jets.
The Broome side defeated Roebourne’s Lady Mustang in an exciting showpiece encounter.
No Limits lifted the under-16 boys’ title and saw off the challenge of Hedland side Young Buccs in the final.
Talented youngster Albert Dolby earned the umpire’s vote as most valuable player.
The carnival, now in its seventh year, drew competitors from across the Pilbara, Kimberley, Gascoyne and the Mid West to South Hedland’s JD Hardie Centre.
Over 180 games took place, with several hundred people witnessing a showcase of speed, style and skill on Sunday.
Participation levels were high in all age groups.
Travelling side Onslow Nomads even boasted a talented 13-year-old in its ranks.
Organiser Christine Black said the carnival, which commemorated her late brother, epitomised his love for basketball and was about bringing the community together.
She said it offered up-and-coming young players the opportunity to display their talents and pit their skills against competitors from across the State.
This was the first year the carnival had been held outside of Perth.
It will be held in Hedland next year during the Easter break.
