BHP Billiton’s newest residential development, Quattro, was opened in South Hedland earlier this month to much fanfare.

The mining giant unveiled its new one, two and three-bedroom units with single people, couples and families in mind.

Rail general manager Michael Bailey said BHP had been part of the community for more than 50 years and the company planned to be operating in town for 100 years to come.

“The $50 million Quattro development is in addition to our substantial investments in major community infrastructure and social programs,” he said.

“It also demonstrates our support for Government’s long-term vision to transform South Hedland into the Hedland City Centre.”

The development comprises 55 one and two-bedroom town houses and 20 one-bedroom units. It has shared recreational facilities including landscaped gardens, a children’s playground and barbecue facilities, as well as caravan bays for residents to use.

The design and features of Quattro, according to BHP Billiton are the result of extensive consultation and feedback from employees and stakeholders, including LandCorp and the Town of Port Hedland.

The development also features artwork by local Spinifex Hill artists Frank Footscray and Teddy Byrne, which highlights the importance of flora and fauna to the Port Hedland community.

More than 1000 BHP staff members call Hedland home, with about two-thirds of them living in South Hedland. Quattro will supplement the existing 1100 residential dwellings owned by BHP in Port and South Hedland and will ultimately replace ageing accommodation.

Employees wishing to move into the Quattro development are required to enter a ballot system.
