The Care for Hedland Environmental Association will be hosting the Town’s first formal bird watching surveys and identification field trips to coincide with the Shorebird 2020 count this month.

Care For Hedland, in association with Birdlife WA, will be holding free workshops next weekend for local birdwatchers to learn about how to find, identify and record the shorebirds in the Pilbara.

Care for Hedland coordinator Melissa Wood said the shorebird 2020 count was a national shorebird monitoring program which aimed to gain a better understanding of the nation’s shorebird population.

She added that it was the first time formal counts had been conducted in the Pilbara region.

“This workshop will be covering an Introduction to shorebird ecology, introduction to Shorebirds 2020 Project, shorebird identification features, field surveys, identification in the field and shorebirds of Port Hedland,” she said.

Care For Hedland Chairperson Kelly Howlett said the organisation was also keen to see local residents and schools get involved through backyard bird counts and seasonal observations.

“Care For Hedland are also keen to host bird watching tours both in Town and in the surrounding area this year as well as remote area camping and bird watching expeditions if the interest demands,” she said.

The workshops will be held on March 19 and 20 at the PPA Sealanes Centre, 71 Richardson St, Port Hedland from 9am to 4pm.
