Bloody Slow Cup draws fast crowd

North West Telegraph

The Bloody Slow Cup tribute weekend and rugby match was a success again this year with an estimated 2500 people in attendance.

The annual event memorialises the four police officers who were killed near Newman Airport on Australia Day 2001.

A remembrance service was held at the crash site on October 19, and the games took place at Capricorn Oval.

Newman police Senior Sergeant Shane Sadler said the event was well-attended, with the four families of the deceased, officers from WA and the Northern Territory, and members from other emergency organisations and the community all turning out to show their support.

"The Bloody Slow Cup committee has done a lot of work over the past couple of months to enhance the grounds and facilities, and approximately 500 people attended the ceremony," he said.

"The feedback was that this was the best service that has been held out there."

In a show of solidarity, WA Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan and some of his Senior Executive Team also turned up to the event.

"The most poignant part of the service was where two Police Air Wing planes performed a flyover following the minute's silence," Sen. Sgt Sadler said.

The Bloody Slow Cup match itself was a hard-fought, relatively even match with New Zealand only running away with the win in the last 10 minutes of the game.

The Kiwi's recorded their 8th win out of the nine games held, with Australia's last victory in 2009.

The two medals awarded to the best players from both sides are named in honour of the four deceased police officers.

The Capes-Everett Medal for best player from New Zealand went to James Murray for the 4th time and Charlie Mitchell won the Ruland-Dewar Medal for best player from Australia.
