BMX: Siblings race for State glory
Three talented riders have made their way to Kalgoorlie to take on the best at this weekend's BMX Sports WA State titles.
Siblings Chelsea, Jasmin and Ty Kilmartin are competing in the under-14s, under-11s and under-8s (sprockets category) respectively.
The competition comes off the back of fantastic performances in this year's local BMX competition with Jasmin finishing first in the North West titles for her age group, Ty coming first in the sprockets and Chelsea finishing third in her division.
This is the second year the trio have competed in the State titles, with Jasmin finishing fourth in the under-14s and Ty finishing third in the sprockets in last year's event.
The siblings' mother Michelle Kilmartin said they were nervous because the track in Kalgoorlie was a lot different than the Pilbara tracks.
"They've got an eight-metre start gate whereas our one is three (metres) and they've got bitumen on the corners in Kalgoorlie whereas we still have dirt, and the jumps and the track are much bigger," she said.
Hedland BMX Club president Matthew Galloway said the siblings would have a tough challenge ahead of them, racing against riders who had taken on more tracks against better riders.
"Ty has got a fearless attitude, he's got a good balance on the bike … Jasmin's the same, she always goes out and competes, it's what makes them good on the bike," he said.
"Hopefully there's good outcomes ahead of them, they're certainly going to be better riders just from having gone and done this, they're going to be stronger riders, it's going to give them better skills to compete."
He said it was a blessing to have the talented sibling riders in the club because they raised the standard of racing for other riders.
The State titles invites up to 500 riders to compete.
