Boxer makes beefy return

A local boxer has defeated the 2011 State 91kg-and-above champion in his first fight in close to 20 years.

Daniel Moyle, who has lived in Port Hedland his entire life, fought in 12 fights between the age of eight and 12 at an amateurs level, winning 10 and losing two.

Moyle, now 30, gave up his boxing career until late last year when his newly built shed inspired him to start training again.

Last month, the Hedland boxer took on 2011 WA 91kg-andabove champion Trent Fitzgerald at the Italian Club in Perth, in his first bout since his childhood fight, winning 29-21.

Moyle said he had signed up with Balga Boxing Club in Perth because of a lack of places to box in the North West, and his coach had entered him into the fight.

“When I heard about this guy I was fighting I was pretty nervous, but they needed a superheavy to fight so I though I may as well have a go,” he said.

“It went really well on the night – lots of locals came down to support me, which helped heaps, because without them I would have felt a bit out of water.”

Moyle, who was sponsored by Bloodwood Tree Association for the trip down to Perth, said his coach was impressed with his performance and was planning more fights in the future.

Fitzgerald is reportedly keen on a rematch.

“I’m just going to keep on fighting, try and take it that step further,” Moyle said.
