Buffet, prizes and fundraising...

More than 50 locals came together donned in pink at Newman House Pink Ribbon breakfast last month to join the national fight against breast cancer.

Participants were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast, raffles and prizes donated by local organisations and individuals in town.

Event organiser Georgie McInerney said it was a fantastic morning to raise awareness, remember those lost to cancer and celebrate the survivors.

“It was such a fantastic mix of people, many of whom wouldn’t normally connect, gathered together for a common cause,” she said.

“Whether it’s breast cancer or another form of cancer, we all know someone who has been touched by this disease.”

Ms McInerney said it was her mother’s journey with cancer which inspired her to start a Pink Ribbon fundraiser in Newman.

“My mum has now been a survivor for more than three years,” she said.

“She was diagnosed at the same time as my eldest daughter was born and I wasn’t able to be there for a lot of her treatment.

“So for me to be able to contribute to research and raise awareness was a big driver and to see the event bring so many people in the community is overwhelming.

Ms McInerney said the Newman community raised more than $2000 from their Pink Ribbon fundraising effort.

“We raised $1855 at the breakfast and have raised $2065 so far,” she said.

“Thanks to all who came and donated to the raffle, it just goes to show what a generous community we have in Newman.

“After the success of the Pink Ribbon fundraiser, we hope to host regular breakfasts to support a variety of causes next year.”
