Shaw’s Coffee, The Esplanade Hotel and Hedland First National were among 18 businesses voted the best in their respective fields at this month’s inaugural Best of Hedland Awards.

Run by local radio station Spirit 1026 Hedland, the awards encouraged the community to show their support for their favourite local businesses.

More than 2000 public votes were received with Shaw’s Coffee, a mobile coffee service on Wilson Street, gaining the most votes overall and taking out the prestigious title of serving the best coffee in town.

Owner Doris Shaw, who has run the business for almost two years, said she made about 100 to 150 coffees every morning for her loyal customers.

“About 80 per cent of my customers are regulars, ” she said.

“I treat them as not just customers but people I see every day, they are like friends … they come every morning, so they are really supportive.”

Ms Shaw credits good quality coffee beans, her service with a smile and loyal customers for her win at the awards.

Zambrero South Hedland, which won best takeaway, also had about 100 to 130 orders placed in store each day.

Assistant manager Tracey Pederson said the team was excited to receive the award after only recently launching the Hedland store.

Spirit 1026 Hedland station manager Lynda Kelman said she was blown away by the support the awards received with about 70 people attending a cocktail function to announce the winners.

“We had a great response, ” she said.

“Next year’s awards are going to be bigger and better and will include a two-week nomination period.”

Ms Kelman also thanked sponsors Hedland Emporium, Harvey Norman Electrical, Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce, the North West Telegraph, Retravision, Jan Ford Real Estate, The Esplanade Hotel, Scope Business Imaging, The Ibis Styles and the Town of Port Hedland.
