Charges laid over alleged hit and run which left teen injured
South Hedland police have charged two South Hedland men in relation to an alleged hit and run crash which left a 14-year-old boy with multiple leg injuries last month.
The incident occurred on May 3 at 12.15am, when the boy was riding his push bike along Buoy Crescent and Pharolope Street near the JD hardy Centre and was allegedly struck by a small, rounded, light-coloured vehicle.
Following ongoing police investigations, a 20 year-old and 23-year-old were arrested last week and charged with acts or omissions intending to cause bodily harm and with wilfully destroying evidence.
It is alleged following the incident, the accused drove the car out of town and set it alight.
Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall said police were investigating whether this was a vigilante-style attack and warned members of the public against taking “matters into their own hands”.
“I think the message to the public here that taking matters into your own hands will only end up in you being charged with serious offences.
“These two young men...are facing a significant penalty should they be found guilty.”
Sen. Sgt Snashall said the men been charged with an offence that carried a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
The two men appeared in South Hedland Magistrate Court and have been refused bail and remanded until the next court appearance.
The victim is recovering from his injuries in South Hedland, following specialist surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital.
