Church lays foundation for long-term growth

SHANNON HAMPTONNorth West Telegraph

A building project at Port Hedland’s St Matthew’s Anglican Church will provide desperately needed accommodation for church staff.

Four three-bedroom, two bathroom units will be built, as well as a four bedroom rectory for the local minister.

An upgrade to parking facilities and a retaining wall at the front of the church will also be part of improvements for the site.

It is hoped construction of the $5 million project will be finished by June.

The units will be rented out in the short term until they are paid off.

St Matthew’s minister Reverend Phillip Knight has been based in Port Hedland since 2006.

He said the units would provide housing for Christian workers who supported the Hedland community.

Rev. Knight said as the town grew, the church also needed to grow to cater for the needs of the community in the longer term.
