The 2014 BMX North West Super Series will start in Karratha this weekend, with up to 150 competitors expected to take to the track.

The first round will be held at the Baynton BMX track from 4.30pm on Saturday.

NWSS spokesman Rodney Gethin said the series attracted a wide range of competitors.

"The pro riders division offers over $3000 in prize money, shared equally between the males and females," he said.

"Pro riders can complete the track in 34 to 37 seconds, providing quite an impressive show with their jumping and manualling at high speed.

"Riders range in age from two years old up to the age where it is rude to ask."

A 40-strong Karratha contingent received a big leg-up with 2008 Olympian and 11-time national champion Luke Madill running a BMX clinic at the club.

"Luke's ability to demonstrate the skills that riders want to learn and encourage each athlete is what makes him a great coach," Gethin said.

"Madill has been coming to Karratha for the past three years and has remarked at the improvement in the riders with each visit."

After round one, riders will head to Tom Price for the second leg on August 16 before finishing in Port Hedland on September 20.
