Club drive for a new clubhouse

The Port Hedland Speedway Club is calling on local businesses to help with upgrades to its track, in the lead up to the club hosting the Speedway Sedans Australia WA Street Stock State Titles next year.

The State titles will be hosted from May 31 to June 3, and are expected to bring drivers from across the State and country to try their luck in the meet. However, club president Benny Hands said the speedway was in desperate need of clubrooms at the track before the meet was held.

“We need some sort of facility, whether it’s a shed, whether it’s dongas…just somewhere we can hold committee meetings, functions and put our memorabilia up,” he said.

“At the moment we have trophies and memorabilia dating back from the late 70s just kicking around people’s garages and shed, it would be great to have somewhere to display it.

“You go to places like the footy, the go-karts, they’ve got clubrooms – out here we’ve just got dirt, and we need help from companies around town to build something out here.”

Mr Hands said the titles were to speedway what the grand final was to Australian Rules football.

“The titles are held in a different town every year, and this will be the first time in 25 years it’s been held in Hedland,” he said.

“We should end up with roughly 100 street stocks of all classes racing over three days, including drivers from all over the country.

“This is a big thing for the town and a massive thing for the club – anyone who’s serious about racing will be here that weekend.”
