Club flaws in dispute
Less than a month after the official opening of the $4 million South Hedland Bowling and Tennis Club, the president has complained of a litany of faults that he says are costing a small fortune.
Bill Retallick said the problems dated back to June 23, which was the official opening and June 24, which was the move-in date.
"We've had nothing but problems since then," he said.
"Before we had to move in we had to upgrade the power to the kitchen, because the builders didn't allow enough power (and) we've still got a problem with electricity to the kitchen, where there's insufficient power supply to run all the equipment.
"I've had to run power leads around the kitchen, because they didn't put two separate circuit breakers in, so we've now got a trip hazard in the kitchen."
Mr Retallick said the club was also having problems with the water supply.
"At the moment I haven't got any hot water; haven't had since the day I moved in. They've been back two or three times to fix it and it still hasn't been fixed," he said.
"The kitchen has (a) commercial dishwasher, which is connected to the hot water … but that's all been installed incorrectly, because we haven't got enough water flow."
Mr Retallick also said the showers were unusable because of the lack of hot water, the bar hadn't been designed big enough, power to the lights at the tennis courts hadn't been installed properly and the outdoor dining and smoking area was too small.
"My argument is (the builders) knew what was going on in the old club, so why didn't (they) tender for it," he said.
Pilbara Constructions designed and constructed the building, but declined to comment.
Town of Port Hedland chief executive Mal Osborne said he thought the majority of the issues raised by Mr Retallick had already been rectified.
"The design was carried out with extensive consultation with the club committee members and all project partners signed off on all construction and design aspects of the facility," he said.
"We are actively working with the club and the contractor to address any outstanding construction issues."
Mr Osborne said the Town met regularly with the club's management.
