More than 130 Hedland fathers and St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary students roasted marshmallows and camped out last weekend for a night of adventure.

The families began pitching their tents on the school’s oval at 4pm before serving hot dogs for dinner, telling tall tales in the night and waking to a breakfast of bacon and egg wraps.

St Cecilia’s parents and friends committee member Kirsten Thompson said she was rapt the first-time event had proved such a hit.

“Who doesn’t love camping in Port Hedland? And we have the perfect climate for it,” she said.

“There were games of spotlight going on all over the oval in the evening, marshmallows being roasted over the fire pits and plenty of fun and enjoyment had by all dads and kids.

“There was (also) so much positive feedback … (and) great suggestions for how we can make what will no doubt become an annual event even better.”

Ms Thompson said the while the campout was run to build a sense of community in the school, it also aimed to improve St Cecilia’s facilities.

“It was also a fundraising opportunity for a much-needed permanent shade structure on our school oval, due to commence construction in the months ahead,” she said.
