The second annual Marble Bar Reverse Triathlon was held at the weekend, with a field of keen competitors putting on their running shoes for a chance at the title.

This year, the competition drew a field of 14 individual entrants and one team, in contrast to last year, where only one competitor — local legend Jack Bennett —ran the course on his own.

The title went to Hedland man Fred Nortje, who completed the run, ride and swim in just over 29 minutes, also scoring himself the inaugural Jack Bennett Trophy.

The team trophy went to the solo team competitors, the Deadly Zombies, whose oldest competitor proved anything was possible and completed the race just days after leaving hospital with heart issues.

The Marble Bar weather did not disappoint, with a sunny day providing perfect conditions for a morning triathlon.

Hedland competitor Kellie Williams, who came second in the individual competition, said the event was a “true outback experience” and well organised.

“I've done triathlons for a really long time, so it’s really nice to find something that you like to do when you’re living in these remote places,” she said.

“We made the trek down yesterday from Port Hedland and we're staying at the caravan park for a couple of nights and it’s just very different to Hedland and a real treat.

“I think they should hold them more than once a year.”

Event co-ordinator Ian Wray said the triathlon was a huge success and added that he hoped the event would continue to grow each year.
