,Falcons pull off upset win with late surge in top versus bottom clash
The bottom-placed Karratha Falcons have pulled off a remarkable victory, beating the all-conquering South Hedland Swans by two points, their second defeat of the season.
In a game which had spectators’ nails all but bitten off, the lead changed consistently as no side held the run of play for long.
The Falcons went into the first break up by two-points but the Swans looked to have the game heading on a more predictable tack by half-time, heading into the sheds ahead 5.6 (36) to 4.4 (28).
Coming off the highs of the previous week the Falcons had a new-found confidence and weren’t going to let the ladder leaders dictate play.
Victor Bellotti bagged three goals while Dylan Foster-Reed and Jesse Maiorana each gained a double.
There were only two goals in it going into the final quarter and the Falcons rose to the occasion.
They dominated midfield play in the final term and prevented the Swans from getting too many scoring opportunities.
Two more goals and three behinds were enough to see the Falcons finish the upset, winning 9.12 (66) to 9.10 (64).
The Falcons reserves made a much easier game of it, defeating the Swans 16.15 (111) to 6.10 (46).
